CREATING HOMEWARD BOUND

Everybody seems to be getting so excited about the staging of the third Homeward Bound.

Paalala lang po sa lahat, ang dulang ito ay hindi tungkol kina Chance at kung sino pa mang aso at pusa. Ito po ay tungkol sa buhay ng mga tao. Sa kanilang mga pakikipagsapalaran at pamumuhay.

For two consecutive years, I wrote the script and directed Tanghalang Batingaw’s production of Homeward Bound. And I must say, that it certainly made a difference, a remarkable turning point in my perspective. HB gave me the opportunity to more deeply look at issues and to realize that as a creator, I was given the chance to expose truths and positions about one ideology on my personal choice and subjectivism. Veering away from my superficial pen, I decided to integrate education and theatre in my method. I recognized theatre as not only a mode of entertainment but as a powerful instrument catalyzing change and initiating action from spectators. But it can never be denied that before this different kind of magic happens, the audience, the eyes have yet to be filled with wonder and awe by the spectacle in the proscenium.

I enjoyed making the script. And I even took more pleasure in directing. But as the third Homeward Bound comes to the scene, I wonder if I ever get the same feeling again. I feel more pressure because I have to do something unique and better than the second edition. I fear that I might disappoint myself more than the cast, the audience, the producers and supporters. I have an age-long but sensitive issue at hand and I still am hoping that I can give it the proper conviction and timing it so deserves. But with a mighty cast led by Anna Katrina Blanco Daria presented before me, I seem to get more confidence and inspiration. But the pressure is still there. And it is overwhelming.

Come July, Homeward Bound III will premiere at Pope Pius Theatre. And I can only hope for the satisfaction and education of the audience from curtain time to curtain call.

The designs are being experimented. The cast rehearses. The overture will begin soon.
